Yellow Warning Triangle and SSH

posted Nov 4, 2011 5:16 PM by Site Administrator

Maybe you are a bit like me.
Maybe you like/need direct SSH access to you ESXi hosts to perform "different things".
Yet, and unfortunately, as soon as you join the the host to a vCenter, you notice a waning triangle on the ESXi host.
At first, you hope it is something temporary and related to the fact that you just joined the vCenter and that the warning will automagically disappear.  Later on ... the triangle is still there.
After some google perusing, you discover that more than a few people are affected by the issue and that the reason is related to the fact that you have enabled a "grossly unsecured configuration" including SSH or SHELL access.
What if you want to "accept" the SSH risk and want to make the warning disappear?  That way, the next time you notice the triangle, you might become aware of other host issues without having turned visually numb to the pesky icon ... ever present because of your "insecure" choices related to the opening of SSH?
Well the answer is available at the VMware KB2003637.

To disable these warnings:
  1. Select the ESXi host from the Inventory.
  2. Select Advanced Settings from the Software menu.
  3. Navigate to UserVars > UserVars.SupressShellWarning.
  4. Set the value from 0 to 1.
  5. Click OK.
